Magpies and Woodpeckers
This half term Magpies and Woodpeckers are learning all about Brazil. To find out what they are learning about in each curriculum area, please see below.
Magpies and Woodpeckers Classes
Magpie and Woodpecker classes work as a paired class together, where we start the day in our class group for morning work and registration. The aim of our morning work sessions is for children to settle into the daily routine using a highly structured TEACCH programme where children engage in a mix of both 1:1 and independent learning. We use the TEACCH structure throughout our day which promotes independence and give children ownership of their daily routine. For the majority of lessons, children from both classes are split into 3 groups according to academic ability where lessons are delivered in smaller groups where the activities are engaging and motivating. Additionally, small groups are taken out for intensive 1:1 and sensory input.
Magpies and Woodpeckers Summer half term overview planning
This term we are looking at stories with a focus on South American animals and mythical creatures. We will be thinking about the creatures in the stories and how we can describe them so we can describe one that we make up. We will be looking at how we can choose different words to make our descriptions more interesting. Our non-fiction work will be looking at writing instructions for making celebration foods
In numeracy we will be continuing to work on number, counting and comparing numbers and quantities as well as work on addition and subtraction. We will also be exploring symmetry, ordinal numbers, collecting and displaying data and answering questions about it.
Linked to our theme of animals we will be looking at living things and their habitats. We will be learning about how we can classify animals in different ways and be able to name different animals that and the places where they live. We will be collecting minibeasts and looking at them to find common features and what makes the different.
In geography we will be looking at towns and cities in Brazil and comparing them with places that we know. We will also be looking at the differences in the physical geography between our two countries.
This term we are looking at Special and sacred places. We will be visiting different churches, temples and religious sites to help us understand what makes these places special.
This term we will be looking at ball games, throwing and kicking skills. We will be taking part in a special schools athletics tournament
In Design Technology we will be designing and making masks and headdresses following our Brazillian theme using papier-mache and collage techniques.
