  • Attendance

Our aim is that pupil attendance is high at 96% and above.

Why We Aim for 96% Attendance

At Southfield our school, we encourage pupils and families to achieve at least 96% attendance.
Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success, wellbeing, and future opportunities.

1. Learning Builds Every Day

Every lesson counts. Missing just a few days each term can lead to gaps in understanding that are difficult to catch up on. At 96% attendance, pupils are present for the vast majority of learning opportunities.

  • 96% attendance = about 7–8 days absent per year
  • 90% attendance = nearly 4 weeks of school missed per year
Over time, this adds up to significant lost learning.

2. Social and Emotional Development

School is not just about lessons — it is about friendships, teamwork, and belonging.

  • Build positive friendships
  • Develop social skills
  • Feel connected to their school community
  • Reduce anxiety linked to falling behind

3. Preparing for the Future

Our aim is for our pupils to lead the most fulfilling lives possible.

  • Being as independent as possible with a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Being able to read and have strong foundational skills that can be built upon.
  • Having the skills to interact socially and emotionally with others.
  • Knowing what I am good at and knowing where I can be successful.
  • Having a voice and being able to communicate with others.

4. We Understand Life Happens

We recognise that illness and unavoidable circumstances occur.
Our aim is not to penalise genuine absence, but to;

  • Support families
  • Identify patterns early in providing early help
  • Work together to improve attendance where possible

If attendance falls below 90% we will contact families to offer support.

Our Commitment

We are committed to:

  • Making school engaging and welcoming
  • Supporting pupils who face barriers to attendance
  • Working in partnership with families

Together, we can ensure every child has the best possible opportunity to succeed.

The school day is 08.50-15.10.

The doors open in the morning at 08.50 and will close at 09.00 with our register closing at 09.05.

Our updated attendance policy can be found on our website here-https://www.southfield.herts.sch.uk/policies/
