Our first week of Forest School at Southfield has got off to a fantastic start, with pupils beginning their outdoor learning journey by exploring one of the most important foundations for success: safety, listening and teamwork.

Before any adventures could begin, children were introduced to the expectations of Forest School through a range of engaging activities designed to help them feel safe, confident and ready to learn in a new environment. Developing these skills early helps pupils understand boundaries, follow instructions and build trust with both adults and their peers, creating a positive platform for future learning experiences.

A highlight of the week was The Whispering Tree, a special story written specifically for the children of Southfield. Through storytelling, pupils were encouraged to listen carefully, think about key messages and share their own ideas and thoughts. Activities such as this support the development of communication skills by helping children practise turn-taking, active listening and expressing themselves with confidence. Just as importantly, stories provide valuable opportunities for meaningful conversations between pupils and adults, strengthening relationships and encouraging interaction in a relaxed environment.

Children also took part in a matching game designed to promote observation, concentration and cooperation. Working together encouraged pupils to communicate with one another, solve problems as a team and develop important social skills. These shared experiences help children learn how to collaborate, negotiate and celebrate success together, all while building confidence in interacting with both familiar and unfamiliar peers.

For some pupils, the excitement continued with a treasure hunt around the Forest School area. Treasure hunts are a wonderful way to develop listening and following instructions while encouraging exploration and curiosity. As children searched for clues and worked towards a shared goal, they practised communication, teamwork and perseverance. These activities also create natural opportunities for positive interactions with adults, helping pupils develop trust and confidence when seeking support, asking questions or sharing discoveries.

Forest School is about far more than spending time outdoors. It provides a unique environment where children can develop independence, resilience, communication skills and social awareness through hands-on experiences. Every activity is carefully planned to support learning while encouraging pupils to engage with the world around them, build relationships and develop confidence in their own abilities.

We are incredibly proud of how our pupils embraced their first Forest School sessions and look forward to sharing many more outdoor learning adventures in the weeks ahead. The foundations have been laid, and we cannot wait to see where this exciting journey takes them.
