Southfield School Launches An Online Safety Workshop
We would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended our Online Safety Workshop at Southfield School this week. It was fantastic to see so many families taking the time to engage with such an important topic and demonstrate their commitment to supporting their children's wellbeing both in school and beyond.
The session was led by our Deputy Headteacher, Melanie Weinstein, who shared practical advice, guidance and insights into our ever-changing digital world that many of our children navigate every day. From gaming and social media to messaging apps and online content, the workshop explored both the opportunities and challenges that come with growing up in a connected world.
Online safety is about far more than simply restricting access to certain websites or setting parental controls. It is about helping children develop the skills, awareness and confidence they need to make safe decisions online. Just as we guide children to stay safe in the community, we must also help them understand how to protect themselves in digital spaces, recognise potential risks and know where to turn if something does not feel right.
One of the key messages from the workshop was the importance of taking an active interest in children's online lives. Simple conversations about the games they enjoy, the videos they watch and the people they interact with online can make a significant difference. When children know that trusted adults are interested in their experiences, they are far more likely to seek support if they encounter a problem or concern.
Protecting children online is most effective when schools and families work together. By sharing knowledge, maintaining open communication and reinforcing consistent messages about safe online behaviour, we create a strong network of support around our young people. Technology will continue to evolve, but the value of positive relationships, guidance and trust remains constant.
At Southfield School, we are committed to continuing this partnership with our families. We know that navigating the online world can sometimes feel overwhelming, and we will continue to provide information, resources and opportunities for discussion to help parents and carers feel informed and confident.
For families looking for further support, we recommend visiting Internet Matters' parental controls hub, which offers guidance on setting up parental controls across a wide range of devices, apps, broadband providers and gaming platforms: https://www.internetmatters.org/parental-controls
Thank you once again to everyone who attended. By working together, we can help ensure our children remain safe, confident and responsible digital citizens, ready to enjoy the benefits that technology can offer while staying protected from potential risks.
