Southfield School Named One of Hertfordshire's Lead Schools for Music
Southfield School is proud to announce that it has been selected as one of just ten Lead Schools for Music in Hertfordshire, following a rigorous appointment process led by Hertfordshire Music Service, the Lead Organisation for the Hertfordshire Music Hub. Schools were chosen for their commitment to ensuring every child can access music, innovative teaching practices, community engagement, and a dedication to providing inclusive musical opportunities for all pupils.
For Southfield, this recognition reflects a commitment that has long sat at the heart of our practice: music is not simply a curriculum subject, it is a powerful tool for communication, connection and learning.
As an SEN school, we see every day how music unlocks potential in ways that traditional approaches sometimes cannot. Music is often described as a universal language, and for many of our pupils it provides a means of expression when words alone are not enough. Whether through rhythm, movement, singing, instruments or shared musical experiences, children can communicate feelings, ideas and achievements that may otherwise remain hidden.
At Southfield, we believe children should be given every opportunity to share who they are in a multitude of different ways. Music helps them discover their voice, build their confidence and celebrate their individuality. Its unique strength lies in its accessibility. Every child can participate, contribute and experience success, regardless of their starting point.
This ethos extends far beyond dedicated music lessons. As outlined in our Music Development Plan, music is woven throughout school life and across the curriculum. Through songs, rhythm and repetition, music helps develop literacy skills, speech and language, memory and listening. Musical patterns support mathematical understanding, while exploration of sound encourages curiosity and engagement in science. Music also provides opportunities to explore cultures, histories, emotions and relationships, helping pupils connect more deeply with their learning and the wider world.
Alongside its academic benefits, music plays a crucial role in supporting emotional wellbeing and social development. Group music-making encourages teamwork, listening, turn-taking and cooperation. It helps children develop resilience, experience success and build a sense of belonging within a supportive community.
One of the most visible examples of this is Southfield's choir. More than a group of singers, the choir represents a community where every voice is valued. For many pupils, performing together provides a sense of pride, achievement and inclusion. Music creates opportunities for children to participate, communicate and connect with others in meaningful ways, regardless of the challenges they may face.
Being awarded Lead School status recognises both the impact of this work and the ambition that continues to drive it forward. Southfield has been acknowledged for its dedication to creating a comprehensive and inclusive musical education for all students, while also serving as a model of best practice for others.
Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunity to support schools across Hertfordshire. We want to share effective approaches, offer guidance and training, and demonstrate how music can transform outcomes for children with additional needs. As the number of pupils requiring specialist support continues to grow, collaboration and shared expertise have never been more important.
This new role also opens the door to a wider network of resources, knowledge and professional partnerships. By working closely with Hertfordshire Music Service and fellow Lead Schools, we can continue developing innovative musical opportunities for both our pupils and the communities we serve.
Most importantly, this achievement reinforces something we have always known. Being an SEN school is not a disadvantage. Our pupils, families and staff form a vibrant, talented and ambitious community with a great deal to offer. With the right opportunities and support, we can help shape educational practice and demonstrate what truly inclusive music education can achieve.
Southfield has always been a school that sings.
Now, as one of Hertfordshire's Lead Schools for Music, we hope to inspire others to sing with us. Because music does far more than create performances. It creates belonging, confidence, communication and joy. And when every child is given the opportunity to find their voice, incredible things can happen.
