Cyber Security Training Reinforces Southfield's Commitment to Safeguarding
While pupils are enjoying their half-term break, learning continues for staff at Southfield School. During our INSET Day on 2nd November, colleagues took part in specialist cyber security and online safety training, demonstrating the school's ongoing commitment to safeguarding pupils, families, staff and the wider community in an increasingly digital world.
The training was delivered by Chen Tsui from Hertfordshire Constabulary's Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit, who provided valuable insight into two key themes: "Protect Yourself and Your Organisation from Fraud and Cyber Crime" and "Deter and Divert Young People from Cyber Crime."
This session forms part of Southfield's wider approach to online safety. Earlier this term, Deputy Headteacher Melanie Weinstein hosted an online safety workshop for parents and carers, providing advice and practical guidance to help families navigate the challenges of the digital world. By engaging both staff and families in cyber safety education, Southfield is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that children are supported and protected both in school and at home.
During the staff training, colleagues explored the latest cyber threats facing individuals and organisations, learning how to identify common fraud tactics, recognise phishing emails and strengthen digital security practices. The session also highlighted the importance of understanding and managing our digital footprint, reinforcing how online actions can have long-term consequences and why responsible digital awareness is so important for both adults and young people.
Staff were also provided with practical guidance on data breaches and account security, including how to check whether email addresses or online accounts may have been compromised and where to access trusted support if this occurs. These tools and resources not only help staff protect themselves but also enable them to better support pupils and families who may have concerns.
Particularly impactful was the discussion around young people and cyber crime. The training explored how some children can become involved in online activity without fully understanding the legal, personal and educational consequences. By raising awareness and promoting positive online behaviours, schools and families can work together to help young people make safe and informed choices.
This training is a reminder that safeguarding extends far beyond the classroom walls. Even when pupils are on holiday, Southfield staff continue to develop their skills and knowledge to ensure the highest standards of care, protection and education for our community.
