Equine Therapy Journey Begins for Another Group of Southfield Pupils
There were smiles, determination and some truly heartwarming moments this week as another group of Southfield pupils began their equine therapy programme at Digswell RDA.
Although this was only the first session, pupils impressed staff with their confidence, resilience and willingness to embrace a new challenge. For many, simply mounting a horse is a significant achievement, but our pupils quickly demonstrated just how capable they are when given the right support and encouragement.
As part of the session, pupils were introduced to key riding skills, including posture, balance and positioning in the saddle. Through a combination of expert guidance from the Digswell RDA team and support from Southfield staff, pupils learnt how good posture helps them communicate effectively with their horse while developing core strength, coordination and body awareness.
One of the most inspiring moments came as pupils progressed from initially riding while holding on with one hand to confidently extending both arms out straight while the horse was moving. Supported safely by multiple members of staff walking alongside them, pupils showed tremendous trust and confidence as they challenged themselves to try something completely new.
These activities may look simple from the outside, but they represent much more than learning to ride. Equine therapy provides opportunities to build self-confidence, develop emotional regulation, improve communication skills and foster independence. The relationship between rider and horse creates a unique environment where pupils can grow socially, physically and emotionally while enjoying an experience that is both therapeutic and rewarding.
At Southfield, opportunities such as equine therapy form part of our wider commitment to providing meaningful experiences that support every aspect of a child's development. Alongside specialist classroom learning, pupils take part in a wide range of enriching activities including art lessons, swimming, PE, Forest School, outdoor learning, life skills programmes and many other experiences designed to help them develop confidence, resilience and independence for the future.
We are incredibly proud of how positively this new group approached their first session and look forward to sharing more of their progress in the weeks ahead. If week one is anything to go by, we can expect many more memorable moments as pupils continue their equine therapy journey.
