Computing at Southfield school
Thu 15 May 2025Using technology is an important part of our everyday lives. The children at Southfield have also been busy using and exploring technology. In phase 1, the children have looked at torches, turning them on and off and using coloured overlays to make new colours through light. They have also used battery powered toys to explore cause and effect, what happens when they press a button? The children also love using the interactive whiteboard to draw and be creative. In phase 2, the children have been busy learning how to use a computer. They learnt how to select objects on screen and how to resize them. They are starting to learn how to type on the keyboard. In phase 3, the children have been busy making e-books all about The Great Fire of London. They know how to make a background, how to copy and paste their work and how to use clip art. All children at Southfield have a Purple Mash log in and can use the programme to support their learning. Did you know Purple Mash has maths games, spelling games, drawing projects, writing projects and lots more? Mini-mash is also great for phase 1 learners it has lots of different themed activities.

Artsmark award
Wed 07 May 2025Southfield School is very excited to announce that we have been accepted into the ArtsMark award process. Artsmark is delivered by Goldsmiths, University of London and empowers schools with the skills they need to embed arts, culture and creativity across the whole curriculum. We have already begun to make huge steps to achieving our platinum award goal such as celebration of World Art Day, Art related parent sharing afternoons, workshops held by famous illustrations for the Quetin Blake and spray paint graffiti artists and participating in the Hatfield Art project that will be open to the public in the next month. We have also started to rewrite our curriculum with a range of exciting artists, techniques, styles and periods to learn and thrive in. We will keep you updated with our ArtsMark journey and look forward to more exciting new Art events soon!

Owls and Hummingbirds canal boat experience
Fri 02 May 2025Owls & Hummingbirds class had a wonderful time on their canal boat trip. The children had the opportunity to sit at the back and see how the boat is driven. Most of them sat on the deck and watched the ducks. They also had the chance to help out at the locks! Inside the boat, we relaxed, had our lunch and snacks together, and did colouring and reading.
Pupils loved looking out of the windows, helping open and close the canal locks and going for a walk along the canal path. A great day out, made even better by the lovely weather.

World Art Day 2025
Mon 28 Apr 2025On Thursday 24th April, Southfield School celebrated World Art Day. We took part in a range of activities that linked to our new and exciting Summer Art curriculum.
Phase 1, explored their new topic of 'Muck, Mess and Mixture' in a gross motor Art exploration activity. We went outside and explored creating a range of mixing, patterns and lines on big sheets of paper, using scooters, bikes, big rollers and giant stamps.
Phase 2 , explored Art through Music. Our Music Lead, Rebecca, played songs on the piano from London based artists linking to the topic of 'London. Children explored drawing, sculpting or painting along to music, exploring rhythm, tempo genres and style.
Phase 3 's topic is 'Around Britain', On the 6th May, Jays and Blackbirds will have a visit from an illustrator from the Quentin Blake illustrator centre in London. This will be an opportunity for children to meet an illustrator, find out about their work and career path, and try some of their favourite techniques. At the end of the session, children will collaborate to curate a mini table top exhibition of their work.

Science week at Southfield
Thu 20 Mar 2025This week was Science week at Southfield School. Pupils have been learning to conduct experiments linked to this years theme of ‘Change and Adapt’. On Tuesday, Professor Bubbles came to Southfield to host bubble blowout workshops. Pupils took part in experiments with bubbles, making clouds and even got the chance to get into a giant bubble.

Bird of Prey visit Southfield
Tue 11 Mar 2025This week we were lucky to have ‘Birds of Prey’ visit the school. The children were able to look at and handle to owls and eagles. The children were amazed and couldn’t stop talking about their experience.

The Mayor visits Southfield
Fri 07 Mar 2025Today, we had the honour of the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Frank Marsh join our WOW assembly.
He presented awards to Zion from Goldfinches Class and an award to our Junior Leadership Team.
Zion was nominated for an Inspirational Young Person Award with the One Welwyn Hatfield Community Award. Zion was nominated because he is an inspirational role model to his peers at Southfield in being a behaviour champion. He is an exemplary role model in following our school rules and supports his friends to also do so. Zion is the shining light of showing understanding of our rules and supporting others: Kind and Caring / Friendly / Hardworking / Takes care of his School / Helpful /Truthful. Zion portrays empathy and understanding and reminds us all of the fundamentals of how to live our lives.
As well, Southfield School received a Welwyn Hatfield for all 2025 award from the One Welwyn Hatfield Community.

Cycling at Southfield with Herts Disability Sports Foundation
Fri 28 Feb 2025Herts Disability Sports Foundation have started working with Southfield school and teaching the children how to ride bikes. Some of the children are already competent riders and are working on honing their ability to control the direction and speed of their bike. While others are working on balance and confidence. They all enjoyed themselves and we were amazed at the progress they all made in their first session. We are looking forward to next week already.
They will be working with the pupils until the end of the spring term.
